Interview with the company HelloFresh


So while testing out a box from HelloFresh, I also got a chance to send the company some questions. So I would like to thank them for taking the time to answer them. To learn more about the home food delivery service, please click here.

  Here is the interview:

1. Your product is helping families get back to not only eating well but back to the kitchen table. So was that the main goal on why HelloFresh was first created? 
The co-founders of HelloFresh, Dominik Richter and Thomas Griesel, worked extremely long and late hours, wishing there was an easier way they could eat a home cooked meal instead of ordering takeout.  They o realized that they weren’t alone and there were many other people who struggled with cooking. In fact, 50% of the average American’s food budget is spent on foods prepared outside the home!  More and more people in the US are looking for ways to prepare foods for themselves without needing to rely on fast food or restaurants.  Often they struggle with a lack of confidence and time available to learn.  HelloFresh was created to help customers overcome both these barriers in addition to feeling more empowered in the kitchen. 
2. How many subscribers does HelloFresh have monthly in the U.S.?
We do not provide figures on a per-country basis, but globally (over 9 countries) we have more than 850,000. The US is the largest and fastest-growing market making up more than 50% of the business.

3. How much more do you think subscribers save from using HelloFresh vs. going to their local grocery store?
From a monetary & food waste perspective:  When shopping at the store, many food items aren’t packaged for a 2 or 4 person serving (i.e. Sauces, spices, dairy products, etc…) so you end up buying more than you need for a single recipe.  How many times have we bought too much fresh foods only to throw them in the trash later?  With HelloFresh we send just the right amounts for the recipes to reduce this food waste and save our customers money in the long run. 
From a time-value perspective:  Not only do we strip away the unpleasant logistics around cooking at home such as meal planning, grocery shopping, and food prepping - but we also provide simple recipes and shorter cook times to better fit into your everyday routine.  Furthermore, while the meal itself is important, we care most about helping our customers and their loved ones enjoy meaningful time together. This quality time is priceless and what truly nourishes.

4. What makes HelloFresh stand out from other similar companies?
HelloFresh is truly on a mission to save home cooking, and lift the mood around it. While anyone can deliver a box of food, HelloFresh opens up an experience that goes beyond the final plate and brings the fun of cooking back into people’s lives. We know the best way to kick those 5 p.m. excuses is by feeling unstoppable in the kitchen, and that when you cook and eat delicious and healthy meals, you’ll want to keep doing it again and again.

5. How many people are behind in creating the recipes for each box? 
We have many teams that work together to assess multiple data points in order to plan out the menus, develop recipes, and find ingredients to optimize an end product that has flavor, nutrition, and seasonality in mind.  These teams include:

7. What steps do you guys go through to ensure nothing spoils? Do you feel there are any drawbacks in doing the home delivery method? 
We have specially designed boxes with insulating liners, ice packs, and cooling material to keep our food as fresh as possible. We even modify our packaging based on season to ensure optimal freshness.
